Shelter News and More!

I know it's been awhile since I last updated, I apologize.  Been a bit busy and with back to school starting last week for my kids, ehh well it's been a little hectic around my place.  I have 3 kiddos that went to preschool this year, my daughter started her last year of preschool, and my twin sons just started their first year of preschool, so it's kind of a big year.

On August 18th the Animal Shelter had it's first ever Rummage Sale to raise money for the she shelter.  They raised just short of $1000! Which is fantastic! This money will go towards purchasing paneling to make an out door yard area for the dogs to run and play in! This is fantastic news for the dogs at the shelter.  That means, less time spent in their kennels, more socialization with other dogs, and this will hopefully cut down on the kennel aggression that dogs can develope from staying locked in a kennel for too long.  It will help improve their behavior and burn up some of that pent up energy!

I can't wait for the shelter to get started on setting up the new yard for the dogs!

Volunteer days are still on Friday's, at 9:30am and we are going to start doing a weekend volunteer day once a month for our school age volunteers who don't get to come anymore since school has started back.  We really miss those kids! They were really great with the dogs and we know they really enjoyed coming.  Can't wait until next summer when they can start volunteering again on a regular basis.  We've really enjoyed having them there at the shelter helping out.

We are looking into doing another Rummage Sale the first part of October, we had a LOT of items donated by the amazing community, and though we sold a LOT of stuff we still had quite a bit left over so we thought we'd put it towards another rummage sale to raise a bit more money for the shelter.  We thought maybe an adoption day would be nice to have that day too.  And I was thinking about setting up my photography get up and taking some pet photo for like $5 a dog or something (since it'll be too chilly to have a dog wash by then).  I think it would be great if we could talk to some local groomers about doing a nail trimming for like $5-$10 and the money go towards the shelter, but we would need to get some local groomers on board with that idea first.  I know other rescue groups and shelters have done fundraisers like that before and I think it would be a great idea.
Thank you to everyone in the community who came out and purchased
items at the Animal Shelter Rummage sale!
We had the ENTIRE shelter next door to the VFW! We had so many items!
Thank you to EVERYONE in the community who donated items and helped make
this Rummage Sale a huge success for the shelter!
Yeh, that's me.  I was supposed to be working the Rummage Sale (you know refolding clothes...reorganizing tables, but
I couldn't pass up a chance to try out this Transformers Halloween mask. I had a lot of fun just standing their
watching people until they turned around and looked.  They just couldn't take me
seriously for some reasaon.  Even the person who is usually behind the camera
has to have a little fun now and again, right?   ;)
I was thinking the other day it would be cool if the volunteers could get t-shirts that say something like "I'm with the Animal Shelter" or something, I don't know, just a passing thought.  Many of us attend adoption events, transport dogs, and volunteer at the shelter or help with other events and I think it'd be neat if we had t-shirts to wear proudly showing our support for the shelter.  Maybe that's another fundraiser we could do?  Selling T shirts for the shelter?  Just bouncing around a few ideas.

We are *hoping* we can get it Ok'd to have the animal shelter participate in the home coming parade this year.  Have a banner, and either walk some dogs from the shelter, or let people walk their pets in the parade for like $10 or something all dressed up silly and stuff. Again, nothing official just some ideas bouncing around. (BTW The Home coming parade is on September 28th)  GO SPARTANS!!

We also wondered if we could get a high school, (or college level even?) art club to come out to the shelter and do a mural or something on the walls to brighten the place up a bit and make it a little happier looking, instead of soo....brown? (The kennels are painted brown, and the walls around the shelter are white, not very cheerful and playful looking).  But again, just ideas bouncing around.  I know other humane societies/shelters/rescue groups have done things like this and it really makes the place look nice.

If you have a Girl Scout Troop or Boy Scout Troop looking to do something to help the community, bring them on out to the Animal Shelter.  Maybe they can help plant some flowers (one that are safe to have around dogs mind you).  Or do some little helpful things around the shelter.  I think it'd be a great idea!

Right now we have several adorable dogs at the shelter that are looking for homes!

We are also getting ready to partner with the local Little Dixie Regional Library (link goes to their website)! I can tell you that I for one am SUPER excited about this! We will be taking a shelter dog (preferably one of the calmer ones that I can dress up or put props around)  and dressing this dog up to go with a book from the library or an event at the library and they will be featured on the libraries website and facebook page, letting the community know this wonderful dog is available for adoption (and supports it's local library!)  I'm so happy and excited to be partnering with the library on this.  Already have some great ideas!  Be sure to support your local Little Dixie Regional Library (link goes to their Facebook page) and the local Animal Shelter.

We have several amazing dogs getting ready to go into the HOUNDS Training Program, we're so excited for these dogs!
Poor Briggs came into the shelter, was adotped, and then the people brought him
back to the shelter, only to leave him tied to a tree outside the shelter!
Poor boy! He was formerly known as "Hershey" when he first came
into the shelter, I thought he looked like the color of
chocolate.  But now he is known as Briggs and
is going into the HOUNDS Program very soon!
He'll be neutered, UTD on shots, on

heart worm prevention meds and given basic obedience training.
Adoption Fee:  $60 deposit down now, and $60 at the end of training.

She's a gorgeous girl, and she LOVES LOVES LOVES water! She willingly

jumps into the bath tub for her bath and just flattens down to get as wet as she can! Love this girl!
She's a  Norfaux Terrier mix of some sort! She'll be spayed, UTD on shots, on heart worm prevention meds

and taught basic obedience commands. Adoption Fee:   $60 deposit now, $60 upon graduation of the program.
Lilly (I am almost 100% sure she is another one going into the HOUNDS Program
but I need to double check and make sure!)  She's a gorgeous boxer mix, so pretty and
very sweet.  I think she will do quite well there! She'll be spayed, UTD on shots,
heart worm prevention, and taught basic obedience commands.  $60 deposit, and $60 upon graduating
the HOUNDS Program to adopt her.

We also have some amazing dogs getting ready to come OUT of the HOUNDS Training Program! We are excited for their upcoming adventures in a new life!

Thank you everyone who supports the local Animal Shelter! You are helping us do so much, and help so many dogs. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

OH and also a reminder, the DOGGY DIVE IN at the local public pool is August 29th and is $2 (per dog and person I think?)  This is hosted by the Public Pool every summer, and while it has nothing to do with the Animal Shelter, I thought it would be great to mention it! The event is from 6:30pm until 7pm.  Bring your dogs on out to the public pool for an hour and a half of splish splashin and doggy swimming!
