Roadtrip and Puppies

This morning I had the chance to go on a little road trip with a couple of other local animal shelter volunteers.  These little road trips are always among my favorites, because quite frankly, with this crew you NEVER know what is going to happen! We range in ages from young'uns (like me), to the more...."experienced" in life, as you will, because if I call them old they'll have my bum! Ha!

We have a great group of volunteers at our local animal shelter and they go along with the flow pretty well, and are always willing to help out where help is needed.

Today it was traveling to a near by town (that's about 21mi away roughly). It was a rocky start, none of us  got out the door when we were supposed to so we were running behind.  We got there though, that's what matters.

We were dropping a foster pup off at the vet to be spayed (Tinkerbell AKA Batok) is the sweetest, craziest, high energy fun dog you will meet! She is awesome and I just know she will find an amazing home soon).

Our next mission was to find a man about 11 large puppies he needed help with.  He was a hard man to track down, he lived clear out in the sticks.

Mini vans do not do so hot when it comes to icey corners and gravel roads.  We nearly ended up in the ditch and we all wore our "OH SHIT" faces quite well I do believe.  Thanks to expert driving from our driver, we avoided the ditch and made it to our destination.

There were only 10 of the 11 dogs left, as one had found a home before Christmas.  However, the issue was that 7 of them looked exactly alike.  Picture yourself swimming in a see of identical black lab puppies and you are trying to get a photo of each one to send to a rescue group.  There were only 2 females in the entire group too.  So 8 little males were swarming us as we tried to figure out who was who! Thankfully 3 of those little males were easily identified.  I'm still not sure I got everyone.  Pretty sure someone got photographed more than once, like the fat one for instance.  Pretty sure we got him like three times possibly!

They needed collars with names!

However often in situations like this collars are the least of the worries we face.  Often puppies in this particular situation are starving and so very sick.  Thankfully these puppies (and the mama, and 2 aunts) looked healthy.  The pups would do with a couple doses of wormer, but they looked plenty healthy which is always a blessing.  The gentleman made sure his multitude of dogs got fed, even if it meant he went without.

Thankfully it looks like rescue is in the future for these 10 pups, so that is a great thing.  We dropped off a huge bag of dog food for the gentleman and made sure he knew and understood that a rescue DOES want them.  Made sure he was aware of spay/neuter assistance for his 3 adult females, and promised we would be back in another week.

These puppies are NOT going to be a small lap dog.  Heavens no.

They are going to be BIG.  They are going to eat, a LOT, they are going to require plenty of exercise.  They are going to require plenty of training and patience.

However, they are beautiful dogs.  It just breaks my heart that they are here due to irresponsible breeding, and lack of information.  I am praying that this does not turn into a reoccurring problem with this gentleman.

If these dogs didn't get into rescue, the man had "friends" that had no problem "disposing" of the puppies, and the man did NOT want that to happen, but he couldn't afford to feed them any longer.

See what happens when a chance meeting in a grocery store parking lot happens?  Lives are changed (even if they are furry lives, they are still lives none the less)!

Here are a few photos that were taken today, some of my favorites of them all "dog piled".
